“I am shook.”

Quoting the infamous makeup guru/ YouTube celebrity Jeffree Star.

I’m a blogger-slash-Youtuber who is just trying to get her slice of the virtual money pie and while doing my research on Youtube one day I came across a series created by Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star titled The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star” .

What I thought was just going to be another video about rich millennials and their shenanigans actually turned out to be educational, authentic and what I feel social media is truly missing.

Human connection.

Who is Jeffree Star?

Jeffree Star, who has over 16 million subscribers, is a beauty guru/ celebrity Youtuber who made his claim to fame during the Myspace days.

You heard me. Myspace.

You might have seen his (her?) name in the news amidst controversy with the likes of… well… damn near all the Kardashians and even accusations of Star being a racist toward people of color.

Jeffree Star is the founder and creator of Jeffree Star cosmetics and co-founder of the merchandising company Killer Merch that produces merchandise for big names like Kevin Hart and James Charles.

She’s out here collecting her coin and again, I am shook.

Don’t sleep.

Who Is Shane Dawson?

Shane Dawson, who has over 23 million subscribers, is probably my new fave on Youtube and has unofficially been coined as the “Mother Teresa of Youtube” for his insightful docuseries that dives deep into the lives of major Youtubers like Jake Paul and Grav3yard Girl showing a side of them no one has ever seen before.

Their vulnerable side.

*Gasp* Dun dun dunn!

Shane has been filming content for the better part of a decade and is no stranger to living his life to the fullest on camera which has gained him popularity and a loyal fanbase.

He’s become well known for his conspiracy and ghost videos but people seem to be in love with the shenanigans him and his “squad” get into. (Morgan, Rylann and Garret)

Shane has been known to help other fellow You-tubers with their channels by having them push the envelope with their content or develop their brand all while documenting the process so fans can get a genuine look inside the real life of their favorite You-tuber.

However, it seems as if the Star-Dawson docu-series is a match made in viral virtual heaven because it’s literally the hottest thing on Youtube right now.

The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star

Not going to lie to you, Jeffree Star has always been an eye catching person for obvious reasons so I’m not oblivious to who this kick-ass diva is but I wasn’t one to go searching for her videos for fun.

But the good ol’ YouTube algorithm kept suggesting The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star”  video and I finally gave in.

What I came across in their video actually surprised me and shook me to my very core and I believe anyone looking to start a business and sell product should watch at LEAST this portion of Shane’s series.

Jeffree has gone where no one in the beauty industry has ever gone before.

She was giving ALL the secrets or as Shane would eloquently put it, “the tea”.

What really struck me about Jeffree was his authenticity throughout the entire process. Star has been labeled in the past as “out-spoken” or just “too much” but after watching the entire docuseries he just tells it like it is apologetically and in today’s climate people are mad sensitive and don’t like the truth.

I prefer transparency and Jeffree gave me all of it.

Secrets of the Beauty Industry

It’s no secret that social media beauty influencers have been partnering up with major brands like “Too Faced Cosmetics” and “Morphe Cosmetics” but the biggest secret is the way some of these brands have fucked them over.

The most notable incident is between social media beauty guru Nikkie Tutorials and Too Faced Cosmetics.

nikkie tutorials morphe cosmetics

Basically, Nikkie Tutorials collaborated on an eyeshadow palette with Too Faced Cosmetics and signed a contract to only receive a $50,000 flat fee for the collab.

That’s it. All she got was a flat fee.

No percentage, no royalties… nada.

The pallette went on to make $10,000,000 in profit making Nikkie’s $50,000 cut look like pennies in comparison.

This controversial story sheds a lot of light on the issue of big name brands preying on the ignorance of young influencers who just do not know any better.

That’s why it’s important to understand not only the front end of the industry you work in but the back end as well so creatives don’t get taken advantage of the way Nikkie did.

By Jeffree allowing Shane to film the negotiation meeting with Morphe cosmetics was something influencers needed to see.

Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson’s Multi-Million Dollar Plan

What started out as a simple documentary of the ins and outs of Star’s glamorous life actually turned into something like a ‘Brand Deals 101’ course.

Jeffree and Shane discussed the world of brand deals and how Shane actually missed out on $100k opportunities simply because he just did not know how to leverage himself.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

They also discussed a plan to leave the beauty industry shooketh by collaborating on an eyeshadow palette for Shane called Conspiracy as well as Shane’s revamped merch line coining his spirit animal the pig.

The Conspiracy palette is set to release Friday, November 1st and Jeffree is worried all items will be sold out within the hour.

Shane’s merch line has been so since the beginning of October.

Shook.

The Process

Jeffree allowed us inside his makeup factory showing us the tedious journey of how the eyeshadow colors are chosen, tested, pressed and packaged.

Lord what a journey.

And let me tell you I was glued to that damn screen taking it all in because this was the type of information I’ve didn’t even know I was looking for and that a lot of people need to see.

Jeffree was skeptical at first to have the cameras rolling when negotiating the Shane Dawson x Jeffree star eyeshadow collaboration Conspiracy but it was one of the best things he could do for the beauty industry as well as for younger influencers interested in collaborating with brands.

We got to see first hand what goes into the development of an idea and how to execute it from start to finish.

Not to mention we got to witness some scandal as Jeffree’s much anticipated eyeshadow palette Blue Blood was stolen directly from his factory.

The tea!!

What I Learned from Shane and Jeffree

One of the biggest things I learned was a typical and FAIR brand deal is usually a 20/80 or 25/75 split and to not be like Nikkie Tutorials by accepting a flat fee up front.

If I’m slapping my name on a collaborative product and I know the projected sales are going to be through the roof, it’s always a percentage and NEVER a flat fee.

Understanding your numbers and the type of leverage you have as an influencer is extremely important.

Before going to post that product review try reaching out to the company for a possible collaboration which can vary from company to company.

We work very hard as creatives and we have every right to demand a fair deal when collaborating.

Review of the Docuseries

The overall series was literally everything.

I’ve binged watched damn near all of Shane Dawson’s videos and his series with Jeffree Star is his best work. As someone who’s never even looked in the direction of beauty it was so motivational to see Shane fully dive in and putting his entire heart and soul into this project.

Along with the rest of the world, I fell in love with these two and it’s nice to see hard working good people make it.
