Fiptendo: Robin Hood of Technology
"Don't give up on the first time it looks bad - keep going - I would not be sitting here if I gave up after the first time"
"The Kids are the future, they are the most important people who need to experience and experiment with these emerging technologies.
So Fliptendo plans to do our part by continuing to try and get kids introduced to new technology and its applications.
Social media is such a powerful tool if used correctly. It is can be an amazing vehicle when it comes to seeking out and connecting with people, places and experience that are that can help introduce you to a better version of yourself.
That's how we came across FLIPTENDO created by Jeremiah, literally from a simple like on Instagram.
FLIPTENDO is a an affordable virtual reality headset and remote control that allows necessary access to a wider variety of people to such an innovative product.
That lead to our amazing interview with him about the journey of working a 9-5 job as an engineer but always knowing he wanted to make a contribution to his community. But how was he to do it? How did he cross his bridge?
[Culture Fuzz] First question I have to ask is, why the name Fliptendo? I'm always curious about the naming process because it doesn't always come that easy during a brainstorm.
[Jeremiah] I was just sitting in my grandmothers kitchen one afternoon with my nephews and we were going back and forth on names then one of them actually came up with FLIPTENDO.
[Culture Fuzz] That's so amazing you included them in on the brainstorming session, how did that go?
[Jeremiah] It was great! I'm so glad I was able to challenge them to think, and I knew that if they saw I used the name they came up with and they saw how they helped to build the company, they would always remember that.
[Culture Fuzz] Why do you call yourself the Robin Hood of Technology? Taking your own play on "Take from the rich and give to the poor"?
[Jeremiah] Virtual reality goggles are only being sold by Samsung and Google currently at a price that not everyone can afford, especially people in my community. I believe a community left destitute in any way is a community left behind, and mine didn't have access to this growing invention. So I created my own take on the VR goggles and made it financially accessible to EVERYONE.
[Culture Fuzz] What is your motivation for pursuing this venture?
[Jeremiah] I have a lot of little cousins who had no clue what virtual reality was, and that surprised me. So I would show my family and play the games with them and they loved it so much I couldn't get it back! So that got me thinking about the certain obstacles they were facing to owning a popular product like VR. I understand how powerful VR is and the kids NEED to experience this but the price points of the current models out on the market, like Google and Samsung were way to high and they couldn't afford them. Not only that, Google and Samsung products could only be used with programs made by them, so there wasn't a lot of freedom to an invention with so much potential to help people and change the way we do things forever.
I began to investigate different headsets and how they were built, then began collaborating with a manufacturer overseas.
[Culture Fuzz] How long was this an idea before it became a tangible product?
[Jeremiah] 4 months to take my final idea and have it developed but I've always had a love fore gadgets and electronics and I always knew that I was going to have a business, I just didn't know what it was going to be yet. I had a lot of ideas in motion and was doing a lot of different things. Then one day the "perfect idea" came along and I was able to use the resources from all of the other ideas I was working on to create Fliptendo.
[Culture Fuzz] Are there any books, magazine or blogs you read? Videos or speakers that you like to watch?
[Jeremiah] My father was always a hard worker and knew how to hustle. He could always make his own money and at the end of the day he was 100% an entrepreneur' That is what initially showed me that I was able to make my own money outside of a regular job.
I listen to Dame Dash and Gary Vee
[Culture Fuzz] What advice can you give to anyone that might be going through the same struggles and hurdles you went through while developing Fliptendo?
[Jeremiah] Don't give up on the first try just because it might look bad, keep going, I might not be sitting here today with you if I had given up after the very first time it didn't work. I remember the very first time I collaborated with the developer and she gave me my first invoice and it hit me really hard. That was my first introduction to the investment world. I rolled up a blunt, went outside and just kept thinking - I was all in my head - I didn't even tell anyone else what the real number on that invoice was.
At that very moment, I shifted my thinking and realized how much I had invested up until that point. All of my time I had put into everything but most importantly how many people were waiting on the delivery of my product. At that very moment, I took the option of quitting off of the table and chose to keep thinking about the kids and families that were expecting me to follow through. People were depending on me.
There were a lot of little bumps throughout the whole process, but I sold out insanely fast on my first batch of Fliptendo's and made more money in that one month with my business than I did at my 9-5 job.
